WATERSMEET -- Father Aloysius J. Hasenberg, 86, has been removed from priestly ministry and his residence at the rectory of Immaculate Conception Parish in Watersmeet by Bishop Alexander K. Sample of the Catholic Diocese of Marquette.

After a preliminary investigation and consultation with the Diocesan Review Board for the Protection of Children and Young People, Sample decided that there was sufficient evidence that sexual abuse had occurred. However, it should be noted that this is not a final determination of guilt; as in civil law, a priest accused of sexual abuse of a minor is presumed innocent under Church law until proven otherwise.

"This situation and others like it are very painful for everyone," said Sample. "My first concern must always be for the victims/survivors of abuse, and I pledge to do everything in my power to help them on their journey toward healing and peace. At the same time, we must follow the procedures that have been set in place to afford justice to the accused."

The diocese received the allegation in September and the diocese has extended counseling and spiritual outreach to the victim/survivor.

The allegation dates back a number of years and the case has been sent to the Vatican along with civil authorities.

Any complaints from victims/survivors of sexual misconduct by a priest can be made in the following ways: toll free (866) 857-6459 (this is a dedicated phone line for this purpose); e-mail: regroves@chartermi.net; or call the Diocesan Director of Ministry Personnel, Stephen Lynott, at (906) 227-9107/(800) 562-9745,ext.107.
