A former priest of a Catholic church in Tioga County has been accused of sexual abuse in a lawsuit filed by a 21-year old man that accuses the Rochester Diocese and its bishop, Matthew H. Clark, of negligence.

The lawsuit, filed in State Supreme Court in Schuyler County, alleges one act of abuse occurred on Christmas 2001 while the Rev. Father David L. Bonin was priest administrator of St. Margaret Mary in Apalachin, where he served from October 2001 to March 2003.

The Press & Sun-Bulletin does not identify alleged victims of sex abuse, but the plaintiff was not a member of St. Margaret Mary. The lawsuit alleges the plaintiff was molested every Friday at the rectory of St. Mary in Odessa from 1998 to 2001.

Bonin died in March 2003 at the age of 53 from complications of diabetes.

Doug Mandelaro, a diocesan spokesman, said no complaints had been filed against Bonin prior to 2007 when the alleged victim informed the diocese. Later, another individual filed a similar complaint with the diocese.
