CENTRAL OHIO—For more than 30 years, Father Frederick Loyd had a clean record of service in the eyes of the Catholic Diocese of Columbus. He taught at local high schools, was chaplain at several Central Ohio hospitals and served in many different churches.

But when an accusation of sexual abuse surfaced two months ago, his entire history came under question.

Father Loyd joined the Catholic Diocese of Columbus in 1970. According to the diocese, the alleged abuse happened in 1985.

Father Loyd retired from active ministry in 2006.

In November of 2008, the abuse allegations were reported to the Newark police and to the diocese.

One month later, the diocese review board concluded the allegation was credible, and removed Father Loyd from the ministry. However, the diocese pointed out that a finding of credibility was not proof of guilt and that the case was still under investigation.

Churches where Father Loyd has served have published the news in their bulletins, urging any other possible victims to come forward.

The diocese asked anyone who may have been sexually abused by someone associated with the church to notify the police and contact the victim's assistance coordinator at 614-224-2251.
