Superior — A Superior priest accused of having inappropriate sexual contact with an adult had written letters to another priest describing some alleged encounters in detail.

The letters written by the Rev. Robert Urban were obtained by the Duluth News Tribune.

The newspaper reported Wednesday that Urban wrote the letters around 1980, describing sex acts, including encounters with other priests and strangers. The newspaper got letters from Anne Godin, whose now-deceased husband received them from the Rev. Franklyn Becker while writing a book about the priesthood. Becker was a priest in the Milwaukee Archdiocese who was accused of child sexual abuse in Wisconsin and California and later was defrocked.

Godin told the Duluth News Tribune that she and her husband presented the letters to then-Archbishop Rembert Weakland and Bishop Richard Sklba in Milwaukee but said the two did not act on them.

In 1987, attorney Kenneth Knudson confirmed to Godin that Urban wrote the letters.

Urban, 77, is retired but has continued helping in several parishes. Last month, the Diocese of Superior suspended him while police investigate.

Urban hung up when reached by The Associated Press on Wednesday. The Diocese of Superior did not return a message seeking comment. Weakland did not return a voice message.
