Guardia Civil officers confirmed that a 39-year-old priest has been arrested in the Valencia area, accused of sexually abusing two under-age boys. The arrest was made in an unnamed town in the Ribera Alta region last Friday following a report by the boys’ families.

The priest admitted the charges during a statement he made to judicial officials and remains at the court’s disposition. In response, Archbishop of Valencia Carlos Osoro said he was “deeply sorry” about what had occurred to the victims and what they had suffered — similar words to those used by the pope at a service in London on Saturday when referring to the abuses of minors committed by Catholic priests.

Osoro said that as soon as he became aware of the facts he removed the cleric from“all his pastoral duties,” and his teaching job at the Catholic University of Valencia.
