Belgian police have released a Canadian pedophile who was the focus of a 15-year international manhunt.

Eric Dejaeger surrendered to police in the city of Leuven on September 13, The Toronto Star reported.

Authorities decided to free the 63-year-old former Catholic priest because Canada had not filed an extradition request.

Dejaeger pleaded guilty in 1990 to sexually assaulting eight children in the Northwest Territories. He was later charged with assaults in Nunavut.

Born in Belgium, Dejaeger became a Canadian citizen in 1977.

The Star said he was a red code fugitive, the International Police Organization Interpol's highest alert
