A Roman Catholic priest was sentenced on Wednesday for possessing child pornography on his computer.

Robert Timchak, 44, a former associate pastor at churches in Dingman Township and Lord's Valley and a former student teacher at Notre Dame Elementary School in East Stroudsburg, Pa., pleaded guilty in August of 17 counts of sexual abuse of children, criminal use of a communication facility and tampering with physical evidence.

He was sentenced Wednesday to six months to six years in state prison, ordered to pay a fine, submit DNA sample and register as a sex offender.

Timchak was investigated by Pennsylvania State Police after the Dioceses of Scranton passed on to law enforcement a complaint they received about Timchak. The Dioceses suspended Timchak in April of 2009.

Police uncovered 17 images of child pornography on Timchick's computer. The average age of the children in the pictures was 11 ?, police say.
