The Diocese of Rochester announced Sunday, Dec. 12, that it has investigated and deemed "credible" an allegation of sexual abuse of a minor dating back to the late 1970s against the Rev. Dennis J. Shaw. Father Shaw was serving at the now-closed St. Francis of Assisi Church in Rochester at the time the abuse allegedly occurred.

Father Shaw, who most recently has been serving as parochial administrator of Holy Family Church in Auburn, has been placed on administrative leave and his priestly faculties have been withdrawn. He can no longer exercise public ministry in any capacity.

Father Shaw was ordained March 22, 1974. After ordination, he served at Blessed Sacrament Church in Rochester from 1974-1977; St. Francis of Assisi Church in Rochester, 1977-1987; Our Lady of Mt. Carmel in Rochester, 1987-1993; Community of Hope (Our Lady of Mt. Carmel/St. Michael's/Holy Redeemer/St. Francis) from 1993-2005; and at Holy Family Church, Auburn, since 2005.

The diocese included in its announcement a reminder that victims of abuse always are encouraged to report to the civil authorities. To report a case of possible sexual abuse and to receive help and guidance from the Diocese of Rochester, victims are encouraged to contact Barbara Pedeville, diocesan victims'-assistance coordinator, at 585-328-3228, ext. 1215 (toll-free 1-800-388- 7177, ext. 1215), or by e-mail to pedeville@dor.org
