ELM GROVE, Wis. -- Milwaukee investigators are looking into whether an Elm Grove priest sexually molested a minor more than three decades ago.

The Archdiocese of Milwaukee said someone came forward to their victim assistance program alleging that they were sexually molested by Father Laurin Wenig in the 1970s at a local church.

Wenig sent a letter to parishioners at St. Mary's Visitation, where he was most recently working, denying the allegation and informing them of his departure.

An archdiocese spokesperson said Wenig has been at St. Mary's for less than two years and that the Archdiocese takes every allegation seriously, immediately reporting it to the proper authorities.

The Milwaukee County District Attorney will continue to investigate to determine whether charges will be filed.

If criminal charges are not filed, the archdiocese said an independent commission still reviews the case and will make recommendations to the archbishop.
