The pastor of a Mesa parish has been placed on administrative leave over an allegation of sexual misconduct with a minor.

Officials with the Roman Catholic Diocese of Phoenix say the allegation against Father John Spaulding has been determined to be credible.

They say it allegedly occurred more than 25 years ago when Spaulding was pastor at St. Maria Goretti parish in Scottsdale. No other details were released Friday by diocese officials, who say Spaulding has denied the allegation and is fully cooperating with the investigation.

Bishop Thomas Olmstead says he has suspended Spaulding's faculties at St. Timothy parish in Mesa. He says the case is being referred to the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith in Rome.

Spaulding resigned Monday from his position as pastor, effective July 4.
