Fr. Szatkowski is professor at Sacred Heart School of Theology

The LaCrosse Tribune in a story published today reports that Fr. David Szatkowski, a priest of the Sacred Heart community in Hales Corners Wisconsin, was arrested and charged with the second degree sexual assault of a child under 16 years of age. Szatkowski is a professor of Canon Law at Sacred Heart School of Theology.

Szatkowski’s order, the Priests of the Sacred Heart, have their international headquarters in Milwaukee. The order has had a history of transferring sex offender priests, according to lawsuits in South Dakota, where they operate a boarding school for Native American children. They have also been known to transfer sex offender clerics, like Brother Mathew Miles, who after being convicted of sodomizing boys in Washington DC was secretly moved to Milwaukee and is today still being presented by the order in its publications as a cleric in apparently good standing, a clear violation of the American Bishop’s so called Dallas Charter for the Protection of Young People.

Church officials, including Milwaukee archbishop Jerome Listecki, have not released the names, locations or crimes committed by any of the dozens of Sacred Heart clergy who live or have worked in the Milwaukee archdiocese. With the growing revelations about the Sacred Heart order and the arrest of Fr. Szatkowski it is imperative that the order release the names and histories of all those clerics who have assaulted children.

According to the Tribune Szatkowski was in LaCrosse attending a two day conference on canon law at the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe. The conference was hosted by Cardinal Raymond Burke the former bishop of LaCrosse, and now the Prefect of the Supreme Tribunal of the Apostolic Signatura at the Vatican.

According to the criminal complaint Szatkowski grabbed the breast of a girl outside the Radisson Hotel late Monday evening or early Tuesday morning. The girl and her friends reported the assault to the police. Szatkowski denied the charges and appeared in court on Wednesday where he was officially charged.

Szatkowski teaches at Sacred Heart School of Theology in Hales Corners. The school is the largest seminary in North America which is dedicated to preparing candidates for the priesthood who are over 30 years of age. The archdiocese of Milwaukee sends students from St. Francis Seminary to Sacred Heart for official training. Last year, SNAP officials voiced concern over the seminary’s knowledge of Fr. Alejandro Flores, who pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting a child while he was a student at the seminary.

SNAP, the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests, is the world’s oldest and largest support group for clergy abuse victims. We’ve been around for 23 years and have more than 10,000 members. Despite the word “priest” in our title, we have members who were molested by religious figures of all denominations, including nuns, rabbis, bishops, and Protestant ministers. Our website is SNAPnetwork.org.
