PROVIDENCE, R.I.—A former West Warwick deacon has been charged with child molestation.

Officials say 71-year-old Laurence Gagnon was arrested on Wednesday at his Warwick home after being interviewed by police.

The Diocese of Providence says Gagnon resigned from St. Joseph Parish in West Warwick on June 18 after he was accused of inappropriate behavior. The diocese also says the initial allegation was not "criminal in nature."

Police say the charges stem from incidents involving three middle-school boys at St. Joseph's School. Police say Gagnon was arraigned on Wednesday afternoon on three counts of second-degree child molestation. Bail was set at $30,000 and Gagnon was ordered to stay away from children under age 16.

It was not immediately clear whether Gagnon has a lawyer. A message was left at his home.
