The Diocese of Scranton announced Tuesday that a priest with local ties has been accused of sexually abusing a minor.

An adult has accused the Rev. Thomas P. Shoback of sexual misconduct with a minor, according to a diocese statement.

Shoback had once served as assistant pastor at St. Matthew's in East Stroudsburg, according to the diocese, but it is not known how long he served there. It was one of nine different stops during his career, including time on the faculty of Bishop Hoban High School in Wilkes-Barre.

The diocese statement claims the victim, now an adult, said the abuse happened while he was a minor in Tioga County.

Diocese officials said they immediately contacted law enforcement authorities to report the charge.
