  Priest Arrested for Sex Assault of a Child

Douglas County Sheriff's Deputies announced on Monday the arrest of a Catholic Priest on sex assault charges involving a child.

The priest is associated with the Society of Jesus Chicago-Detroit Province of the Catholic Church, according to Douglas County Sheriff's Office.

Father Richard James Kurtz, S.J., 67, was arrested on charges of Sexual Assault on a child by one in a position of trust and attempted Sexual Assault on a child by one in a position of trust, Douglas County Deputies said.

The investigation began in June of 2011 when the Society of Jesus Chicago-Detroit Province notified the Douglas County Sheriff's Office of the alleged crimes that occurred in 2001, said deputies.

A warrant was issued for Father Kurtz' arrest on November 18, 2011.

Father Richard James Kurtz, S.J. worked as a Chemistry Teacher at the University of Detroit High School in Detroit Michigan at the time of the alleged assault, said deputies.

The victim and Father Richard James Kurtz, S.J. were in Douglas County when the alleged assault occurred, according to deputies.

The victim was a male under the age of 18 at the time of the assault, deputies said.

The alleged assault did not have any connection to any church in Colorado.

On November 21, 2011, Father Richard James Kurtz was arrested in Chicago and booked into the Chicago jail on a $100,000 bond.

This investigation is on-going and no further information is available at this time, according to deputies.
