PROVIDENCE - The Roman Catholic Diocese of Providence said Monday that the Rev. Monsignor John Allard has resigned as pastor of St. Agatha and Precious Blood parishes in Woonsocket and has been placed on administrative leave.

The diocese said the action follows a credible allegation of sexual misconduct of a minor that took place more than 30 years ago.

The diocese said in a statement that Allard has taken responsibility for his actions and that he has expressed his profound remorse for the harm he has caused.

Bishop Thomas Tobin appointed the Rev. Wilfred Gregoire, a senior priest in residence at St. Agatha, temporary administrator of the parishes.

State police said the alleged abuse happened at Immaculate Conception in Cranston in 1981.  They said the alleged victim, who was 15 at the time, asked that charges not be pressed against the priest.
