A Roman Catholic priest has been arrested on charges of sexually molesting a teen-age boy and distributing marijuana, officials said Thursday.

The Rev. Carmine Sita, 37, was arrested Wednesday and released in the custody of the Hudson County Probation Department by Superior Court Judge Lawrence Bilder.

Hudson County Prosecutor Harold Ruvoldt Jr. said Sita is charged with sexual contact with a male juvenile "on diverse dates" and "distribution of a controlled dangerous substance."

Ruvoldt refused to disclose the dates of the alleged incidents and the age and identity of the youth.

Sita has been a priest at St. Aloysious Roman Catholic Church in Jersey City for the past six years. A woman who answered the phone at the rectory Thursday said the church would have no comment on the case.

The charges have been referred to a grand jury, said Ruvoldt.

Monsignor Franklyn M. Casale, chancellor of the archdiocese, issued a statement on behalf of Archbishop Peter Gerety of Newark that said:

"Father Carmen C. Sita is a priest of the Archdiocese of Newark who has done good work since he was ordained in May of 1976. He is the object of our deep concern as is the whole community in Jersey City. We, of course, are unable at the moment to discuss the case."
