A Catholic Priest Pleaded Guilty Monday to One Count of Lewd and Lascivious Conduct for Sexually Molesting Two Teenage Boys

Ada County Deputy Prosecutor Jim Carlson said he agreed to allow the Rev. Mel Baltazar to plea bargain his case because he felt society would not be protected any better if the priest faced trial.

Three counts of lewd and lascivious conduct were reduced to one count and the priest pleaded guilty to a combination of the charges, Carlson said. District Judge Alan Schwartzman set a sentencing hearing for Dec. 19.

The priest was accused of committing sexual acts with a 15-year-old boy two times last winter and performing a sex act with another boy under the age of 16 in April, Carlson said.

He resigned as chaplain at St. Alphonsus Regional Medical Center in Boise last spring after he was accused of the charges.
