Orlando Diocese to Pay $490,000 for Priest's Assaults

The Roman Catholic Diocese of Orlando has agreed to pay $490,000 to the family of one of four altar boys sexually molested by a priest.

Four suits accuse the Rev. William Authenrieth of molesting the boys while he was a priest at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Rockford between 1978 and 1982. The suits also charge the diocese and Bishop Thomas Grady were negligent in not fully investigating the priest's background.

The settlement of one of the suits, announced Thursday, was reached because the plaintiff, now 19, no longer wanted to be involved in litigation, said Sheldon Stevens, an attorney for the plaintiffs. The money will be paid over 30 years, attorneys said.

The other suits are pending. In a deposition filed in Brevard Circuit Court, Authenrieth admitted fondling the four boys.

Diocese attorney Ladd Fassett declined comment on the settlement.
