  Baltimore Priest Faces Sex Charges

Washington Post
October 5, 1988

A Roman Catholic priest has been indicted in Baltimore County Circuit Court on a charge of perverted sexual practice involving a juvenile boy from July 1982 to early 1985, prosecutors said yesterday.

Assistant State's Attorney Phil Jackson said the Rev. Marion Francis Helowicz was charged Monday in the single-count indictment. The charge carries a maximum penalty of 10 years' imprisonment upon conviction.

The Rev. William Au, spokesman for the Archdiocese of Baltimore, said Helowicz is not actively working as a priest and has been on "medical leave of absence for some time." He was associate pastor of St. Stephen Church in Kingsville, a Baltimore suburb, at the time of the alleged offenses, according to archdiocesan sources, and later served in Cumberland, Md.

Helowicz could not be reached for comment.
