Trial Set for Priest in '60s Sex Abuse Case

Chicago Tribune [La Crosse]
July 1, 1991

A trial date has been set for a priest accused of sexual misconduct with a teenage girl in Marshfield in the 1960s. La Crosse County Circuit Judge Dennis Montabon scheduled the trial for Rev. Thomas Garthwaite to start March 31, 1992. Garthwaite, now about 61 years old and pastor at Sacred Heart Parish in Jim Falls, is a native of Cashton and a graduate of Aquinas High School in La Crosse. He was associate pastor at Sacred Heart of Jesus Church in Marshfield when the incidents allegedly occurred between 1963 and 1966. The suit says Garthwaite had sexual contact with a girl, identified as Jane Y. Doe, whom he was counseling. She was 14 years old in 1963, according to the complaint. The suit also contends that when the girl reported the incidents to her own pastor in 1965, Garthwaite beat her and threatened to kill her if she ever discussed the incidents again.
