Former Priest Sued for Sexual Abuse

United Press International
November 15, 1991

A former priest and the Fort Wayne-South Bend Roman Catholic Diocese are being sued for negligence and clergy malpractice by a man who claims the priest sexually abused him as a teenager.

The accuser is a former Allen County man now residing in Massachusetts. He alleges in the suit that from June 1982, when he was 14, until June 1985, the Rev. James Blume subjected him to sexual abuse.

The suit names Blume, a former priest at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in New Haven and former assistant pastor at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Fort Wayne. Also named are Bishop John D'Arcy and the diocese.

D'Arcy released a statement Thursday in response to the suit filed in U.S. District Court on Tuesday against Blume. He said he asked for and received Blume's resignation from the priesthood and diocese after learning of an "unfortunate situation" involving Blume and the plaintiff.
