A Catholic priest was in custody Thursday on charges he molested three students at St. Rita Catholic School, police said. The Rev. Ponciano M. Ramos, 45, of St. Rita Church, was being held on $2,500 bond after surrendering to police Thursday morning. Ramos has denied charges that he touched the genitals of three 13-year-old boys in April. Indianapolis police Detective Stephen W. DeBoard said the incident allegedly occured when the priest was questioning students April 24 at St. Rita.

The detective said the boys were suspected of breaking small glass vials that emitted an odor similar to rotten eggs. Three of the 12 boys who were questioned later complained that the priest told them to remove their pants and that he then molested them.

The Indianapolis Catholic Archdiocese issued a statement Thursday that it was cooperating with police investigating the allegations. "We are concerned about any allegations of child molestation in our schools. Father Ramos has demonstrated himself to be a man of integrity in the past and we see no need to doubt his innocence," the statement said.
