Roman Catholic Priest Arrested on Molesting Charges Stemming from Videotape

A Roman Catholic priest faces charges of molesting a teen-age boy after a prosecutor's friend discovered a pornographic scene at the end of a videotape of a parade, the prosecutor said Wednesday.

The Rev. Myles White, 51, pastor of St. Martin of Tours in Kankakee, Ill., was held for a court appearance Thursday on two charges of criminal deviate conduct alleging he engaged in oral sex and fondled a child.

An acquaintance of county deputy prosecutor Curt Palmer purchased a tape White had made of a 1991 festival parade in Culver, Palmer said. "At the end of the parade was a video of what turned out to be Rev. White and a young male having sex," Palmer said.

The youth was 14 or 15 when the incident occurred in 1990 and was unaware it had been taped, Palmer said.

White was arrested Tuesday at a Culver home owned by the Joliet, Ill., diocese, Palmer said.

"He was in the process of cutting up and burning Polaroid photographs of other young nude males," Palmer said. Pieces of those pictures, as well as adult magazines and videotapes, were seized by police, he said.

Palmer said White had not hired a lawyer, and a sheriff's dispatcher said White would be permitted to speak only to a lawyer or clergy.

Sister Judith Davies, chancellor of the diocese, said White has been suspended. She said the church is asking any victims to come forward.

The charges carry a total maximum prison term of 11 years.
