  Priest Accused of Indecent Exposure

Phoenix Gazette
March 12, 1993

Police have arrested a 47-year-old priest for allegedly exposing himself to a teenage boy.

Rev. Wilputte Alanson Sherwood, 47, a Catholic priest at St. Benedict Church in Chandler, is being held at the Madison Street Jail on suspicion of indecent exposure, furnishing obscene materials to a minor and public sexual indecency to a minor.

Chandler police said Sherwood picked up a 17-year-old boy from Tucson who was hitchhiking to Flagstaff about 3 p.m. Thursday. Police allege Sherwood took the boy to his residence in the 600 block of North Beck Avenue, where he made sexual advances.

After the incident, the boy left Sherwood's residence and called police.

Sherwood was arrested later that afternoon.

"We will assess the situation and put into motion our policy which deals with matters of this nature," said Bishop Thomas O'Brien of the Diocese of Phoenix.
