Priest Sentenced for Sexual Abuse

A Roman Catholic priest who pleaded guilty last month to sexually abusing an 11-year-old altar boy at a northeastern Pennsylvania church in 1987 has been sentenced to additional time.

Robert Caparelli, 54, was sentenced to an additional 17 1/2 months to 6 years. That was addition to a 2-to-5-year sentence he is already serving in Williamsport for sexually abusing another altar boy in May 1992 at the same parish, St. Vincent DePaul Church in Pike County.

Caparelli also was fined $ 5,000.

In a statement Thursday, the Scranton Diocese said it was "with a heavy sense of sadness and regret" that it acknowledged Caparelli's guilty plea to the additional child sexual abuse charges.
