Priest in Lawsuit Turns out to Be Dead

DENTON -- A Catholic priest named as a defendant in a $ 140 million sex abuse lawsuit died March 7, something the plaintiff didn't know when the suit was filed last week.

Gary Strausberg, a Baltimore attorney representing the plaintiff, a 21-year-old Greensboro man, said yesterday he had been told the priest was still alive. "What impact it will have on the lawsuit -- I need to reflect on that," the lawyer said.

The civil suit filed Oct. 13 in Caroline County Circuit Court alleges the Rev. Leonard J. Mackiewicz, of Lewes, Del., abused Mr. Strausberg's client at his home and in the rectory of a church in Marydel during summer 1987. The former altar boy is also suing the Catholic Diocese of Wilmington and the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Marydel.
