Rev. John J. Dewire, retired pastor of St. Lawrence Church in Brookline, died Friday of a cerebral infarction in the St. Patrick Manor nursing home in Framingham. He was 73.

Rev. Dewire was born in Somerville. He graduated from Boston College in 1942 and from St. John Seminary in Brighton in 1946. He was ordained as a priest by then-Archbishop Richard Cushing in Holy Cross Cathedral in the South End.

Rev. Dewire was pastor of St. Lawrence Church in Brookline from 1971 until his retirement in 1983. He also served in the following parishes: St. Bridget in Abington, St. Benedict in Somerville, St. Mary in Hull, St. Joseph in Needham, Sacred Heart in Watertown, St. Mary in Waltham, St. Ann in Wayland, St. Mary Star of the Sea in Beverly, St. Anthony in Revere and Immaculate Conception in Marlborough.

Rev. Dewire leaves two sisters, Gertrude E. Keyes of Springfield and Evelyn J. Sullivan of Brighton; and a brother, Thomas A. of Colorado Springs, Colo.

A funeral Mass will be said by Cardinal Bernard Law at 10 a.m. Tuesday in St. Joseph's Church in Needham. Burial will be private.
