Former Priest Sentenced Saint Paul Pioneer Press January 4, 1996 A former Green Bay priest was sentenced to 30 days in jail and three years of probation after being convicted of sexually abusing a female parishioner who had sought his counseling. The Rev. Edward Witczak, 61, pleaded no contest to four counts of misdemeanor fourth-degree sexual assault in the case involving a woman who is now 29 years old. Brown County Circuit Judge Richard Dietz accepted the plea and issued the sentence Tuesday. Witczak also was ordered to perform 300 hours of community service and pay $1,080 in fines and court costs. Witczak was a priest at St. Elizabeth Seton Parish when the woman joined the parish in 1991. "Msgr. Witczak resigned last week from his duties as pastor of St. Elizabeth Seton Parish. ... He will remain on administrative leave pending the outcome of the civil suit against him," a statement issued by the Green Bay Catholic Diocese said. |
