Florida Priest Resigns after Abuse Accusations

November 3, 1997

Tallahassee, Florida (CWN) - A priest of the Pensacola-Tallahassee diocese resigned as a parish pastor on Thursday after three sisters publicly accused him of molesting them as girls, the diocese announced on Friday.

Father David McCreanor resigned from St. Louis Parish and entered a Church-run treatment center. "He has resigned, but he has not admitted wrongdoing," Father Michael Mooney said. "The bishop has placed him on a leave of absence from all functions as a priest." The priest's accusers said they went public with their charges when it appeared the diocese was not taking any action on their complaint filed 14 months ago. "Until this week, it did not appear anything was going to happen," said Mary Jane Vossler, the mother of the sisters. "It bothers me how the church bureaucracy works."

The women allege that Father McCreanor had sex with two of the sisters when they separately sought counseling more than ten years ago. The third sister said she was propositioned by the man when she sought counseling a few years later.
