Fr. William J. Shields, 70, of Holy Family Villa, Bethlehem, died Sunday, Aug. 27, in his home.

A priest of the Allentown Diocese, he was pastor of the Church of St. Nicholas, Weatherly for 21 years, retiring in 1995, and was named Pastor Emeritus. During retirement he assisted at St. Columbkill Church, Boyertown. Previously he was assistant pastor of St. Peter's Church, Reading, Administrator of St. Ann's Church, Lansford, and assistant pastor at St. Lawrence Church, Catasauqua, St. Paul's Church, Allentown, Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church, Shenandoah, Schuylkill County, St. Mary's Church, Hamburg, St. John Baptist de la Salle Church, Shillington, Berks County, and St. Ambrose Church, Schuylkill Haven, Schuylkill County.

He studied for the priesthood at St. Charles Borromeo Seminary and was ordained in 1958.

Survivors: Brothers, James, George and sister, Margaret Lloyd, all of Philadelphia; nieces and nephews.

Services: Memorial mass, 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, St. Columbkill Church, Boyertown. Vigil Service, 7:30 p.m. Friday, St. Nicholas Church. Mass of Christian Burial, 11 a.m. Saturday, St. Nicholas Church. Call 6-9 p.m. Friday and 9-11 a.m. Saturday, St. Nicholas Church.
