In Brief: Priest in Court for Alleged Sex Abuse

El Paso Times
June 5, 2001

An El Paso Catholic priest was in court Monday for a pre-trial hearing on the charge of indecency with a child for allegedly fondling a 13-year-old boy at a pool party Aug. 31, 1998.

Jose Alfredo Olivas, 46, was the chief priest at Santo Ni?o de Atocha Church for seven years, until he was put on administrative leave by the Diocese of El Paso in 1999 after the diocese was told about the accusations.

During the pre-trial hearing in Judge David Guaderrama's 243rd District Court, defense attorney Jaime Olivas, no relation to Jose Olivas, and Assistant District Attorney Peggy Hamilton agreed not to use some evidence, such as computer files and a laptop computer taken from Jose Olivas' home, during the trial, scheduled for Oct. 2.
