Edward J. Sadowski Jr., a deacon at St. Vincent de Paul Church, in Coventry, has been charged by Massachusetts State Police with attempted statutory rape and child pornography over the Internet.

Sadowski, 58, of 452 Shady Valley Lane, a deacon for about 24 years, was arrested Thursday after an undercover state trooper posing as a 14-year-old girl arranged to meet him at a Watertown motel. During his arraignment yesterday in Waltham District Court, Sadowski was charged with attempted statutory rape, attempted enticement of a minor to pose in a state of nudity, and the attempted dissemination of matter harmful to a minor. He is being held on $10,000 bail.

The Rev. Paul Laporte, pastor of St. Vincent de Paul Church, said Sadowski had been a deacon at the church for more than 10 years. Sadowski, who is married, is a member of the clergy and assists with the liturgy and other duties but cannot say Mass, Laporte said.

Laporte said that the Catholic Diocese of Providence would decide whether Sadowksi would continue as a deacon. Diocesan officials could not be reached for comment yesterday.

The attorney general's office said that during a two-week investigation, Sadowski communicated with the trooper over the Internet, using the screen name "meat."

Sadowski allegedly sent nude photos of himself to the trooper, as well as other pornographic pictures. He was arrested at the Super 8 Motel in Watertown, where he planned to meet the supposed teenager for the purpose of photographing her nude and having sex with her. At the time of his arrest, Mr. Sadowski had a digital camera in his possession, the attorney general's office said.
