  Statement Concerning Marist High Lawsuit

By Bud Bunce
Archdiocese of Portland
May 13, 2002

The Archdiocese has been named in a lawsuit filed in Multnomah County alleging sexual misconduct involving a minor by former Marist Brother, Cronin [Lawrence M.] Halsey. The events are alleged to have occurred between 1968 and 1972 at Marist High School in Eugene.

From its founding until the early 1990's Marist High School was operated by the Marist Brothers. The Marist Brothers had full charge of the administration of the school, including supervision of students and faculty. Brother Cronin was initially assigned to Marist High School by his religious order. After he left the Marist Brothers, Mr. Halsey returned to Marist High School where he worked until his retirement in 2000. The Archdiocese is not aware of any complaint of sexual misconduct against Lawrence Halsey.

Child abuse is contrary to all that the Catholic Church believes and professes about the dignity of human persons. It is never to be tolerated. The Archdiocese of Portland has a Child Abuse Contact Line that deals exclusively with reports of sexual abuse of minors by church personnel (503-416-8810).
