  Another Cleveland Priest Suspended

Akron Beacon Journal [Ohio]
November 4, 2003

Another Roman Catholic priest has been suspended while the Diocese of Cleveland investigates an allegation he sexually abused a child in the mid-1970s.

Parishioners at Saints Philip and James parish in Cleveland learned over the weekend that their pastor, the Rev. J. Brendan McNulty, had been placed on leave after an allegation of sexual abuse surfaced against him late last week. McNulty, who was ordained in 1974, is the 17th priest to be suspended amid abuse accusations.

McNulty's suspension came after a review board conducted a preliminary investigation and determined that the allegation against him was credible enough to warrant a full investigation. No details were released by the diocese.

Robert Tayek, spokesman for the diocese, said the allegation was reported immediately to civil authorities.

McNulty's case is now in the second stage of review, as are many of the 17 priests' cases. During the second stage, the committee finishes its full investigation and makes a recommendation to Bishop Anthony M. Pilla.
