Statement Concerning a Lawsuit Naming Fr. Henri Arata

By Bud Bunce
Archdiocese of Portland in Oregon
December 3, 2003

The Archdiocese of Portland has been informed of a lawsuit alleging sexual misconduct by Father Henri J. Arata more than 30 years ago. The Archdiocese is not aware of any other allegations against Father Arata.

Father Henri Arata was born in 1934. He was ordained in May of 1960, retired for health reasons in 1982, and died later that same year. As has been noted before, dealing with a lawsuit involving events which allegedly occurred more than 30 years ago, and when the priest has been dead more than 20 years, presents a great challenge to the Archdiocese. The Archdiocese will investigate this matter and proceed in an appropriate manner.

Child abuse is contrary to all that the Catholic Church believes and professes about the dignity of human persons. The Archdiocese of Portland is committed to providing a safe environment for all persons served in ministry. The Child Abuse Policy of the Archdiocese is available on the web site: www.archdpdx.org/abuse- policy-revised/.
