Prosecutors Dismiss Assault Charges against Priest

Baltimore Sun
December 12, 2003

Nearly seven months after a Baltimore grand jury indicted a Josephite priest on charges he molested a 14-year-old boy, prosecutors dismissed all charges yesterday at the request of the family of the alleged victim.

"We were asked by the victim's family not to pursue the case, and the decision was made to honor that request," said Joseph Sviatko, a communications assistant at the state's attorney's office, announcing dismissal of the charges against the Rev. Alfred Dean.

Prosecutors had charged Dean in April with second-degree assault, and a grand jury indicted him a month later.

According to documents, Dean was accused of hugging and kissing the boy in April last year while they were in the rectory of the church in the 1500 block of E. Oliver St. The Archdiocese of Baltimore suspended Dean's priestly duties in July last year, and Dean voluntarily stepped down as pastor of St. Francis Xavier Roman Catholic Church in East Baltimore late last year.
