BROCKTON — The Rev. David L. Blizard, 57, a former priest of the Catholic Diocese of Worcester, has been found not guilty in Brockton Superior Court of one charge of indecent assault and battery on a person over age 14.

The acquittal comes almost a year after he returned voluntarily to Massachusetts from his home in Florida to face arraignment on the charge. He was then allowed to return to Florida.

Bridget N. Middleton, spokeswoman for the Plymouth County District Attorney's office, said the acquittal was delivered Aug. 17 after a trial.

The allegation against Rev. Blizard first surfaced in the office of Worcester District Attorney John J. Conte and was turned over to Plymouth County District Attorney Timothy Cruz because the alleged offense happened on July 25, 1988, in Wareham, which is in Plymouth County.

Rev. Blizard left the Worcester diocese in 1988.
