Spencer Rev. Joseph Chu Cong, OCSO (Cistercian Order of Strict Observance) Trappists, 86, of the St. Joseph's Abbey, 167 No. Spencer Rd., died Tuesday, Nov. 30 at the Abbey Infirmary after an illness.

Rev. Cong was born in Haidnong, No. Vietnam son of Chu-Van-Caf and Pham-Thi-Tram. He was ordained a priest at Haiphong in 1948. He entered the U.S. on Jan. 29, 1954 and studied at Fordham Univ. and N.Y.U. He entered St. Joseph's Abbey on Dec. 8, 1961 and made profession on Feb. 11, 1964. He was Superior at Our Lady of the Philippines from 1988-90 and Abbot there from 1990-96.

The funeral will be held Tuesday, Dec. 7 with a funeral Mass at 10:30 a.m. celebrated by Rt. Rev. Damian Carr, Abbot in St. Joseph's Abbey Church, 167 No. Spencer Rd., Spencer, MA. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Abbey Cemetery. Calling hours are Monday, Dec. 6 from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 2:30 to 5 p.m. in St. Joseph's Abbey Church.
