The Rev. Robert W. Schutte, pastor emeritus at St. Boniface Church, Piqua and former teacher at Purcell High School, died January 18 in his hometown of Springfield, Ohio. Ordained in 1943, Father Schutte completed his preparatory studies for the priesthood at St. Gregory and Mount St. Mary's Seminary. He was 89.

Following ordination, Father Schutte served about a year in the Diocese of Saint Augustine, Fla. before returning to Cincinnati as associate pastor of St. Matthew Church, Norwood. In 1945, he was appointed to the faculty of Purcell High School and associate pastor of St. Rose Church, Cincinnati. In 1950, he was named associate pastor of St. John the Evangelist Church, Deer Park while continuing to teach at Purcell.

Because of illness, Father Schutte was relieved of his duties at the church and school in 1955 and the following year was appointed associate pastor at St. Teresa Church, Springfield and later that year to the same position at St. Helen Parish, Dayton.

Father Schutte received his first assignment as pastor at Sacred Heart Church, New Carlisle in 1961 and at the same time was named administrator at Sacred Heart Church, New Paris. He was appointed pastor of St. Mary Parish, Urbana in 1970 where he stayed until being named pastor at St. Boniface in 1977. He was made pastor emeritus of St. Boniface in 1984. He was placed on administrative leave in 2003.

Funeral Mass was at St. Bernard Church,Springfield. Burial was at St. Bernard Cemetery, Springfield.
