  Church, 8 Victims Reach Settlements

Seattle Times
January 22, 2005

The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Seattle yesterday reached a settlement agreement worth $810,000 with eight people who claimed abuse by four priests.

Five of the claims were against the Rev. Patrick Desmond McMahon; one was against both McMahon and the Rev. James McGreal; another was against the Rev. Barry Ashwell.

The eighth was against a priest the archdiocese is not at liberty to name because the priest reached a separate settlement and confidentiality agreement with the victim, said archdiocese attorney Michael Patterson. The total settlement in that case was $50,000, with the priest contributing to that total, said the victim's attorney, Michael Pfau.

McMahon, McGreal and Ashwell have faced previous allegations, and McMahon and McGreal were permanently barred from ministry by the Vatican.

Individual settlements paid by the archdiocese ranged from $25,000 to $225,000. Only one of those eight cases had involved a lawsuit.

The Seattle Archdiocese is facing about 19 pending lawsuits.
