A CHRISTIAN Brother appeared in court yesterday on 136 charges of sexually abusing boys at the Letterfrack Industrial School in Connemara.

A total of 25 boys were named in Cliften Circuit Court as alleged victims in the charges against Maurice Tobin (70) of North Circular Road, Dublin. The offences are said to have occurred between 1959 and 1973.

The 136 charges allege the defendant committed buggery, attempted buggery and indecent assault against the named boys at St Joseph's Industrial School at Letterfrack in Co Galway.

One charge alleges he indecently assaulted a boy at a B&B in Limerick.

Det Garda Hugh McClafferty gave evidence of arresting and charging the defendant, who made no reply to any of the charges.

The defendant was remanded on his own surety of €900 as well as an independent surety of €2,100 to appear again at Clifden District Court on May 23.
