Edward A. Rausch 86, of Somerset, passed away May 14, 2014 following a long and progressive illness, at the Catholic Memorial Home in Fall River. Edward spent 44 years with his loving wife, Janet (White) Rausch.

Born in Taunton, he was the son of the late Alfred and Mary (McCarthy) Rausch. Educated in Taunton, having graduated from Coyle High School in 1946, Edward entered St. Mary’s Seminary and University in Baltimore and was ordained to the Catholic priesthood for the Fall River Diocese in 1954.He then was assigned to St. John’s Church in Attleboro where he remained for sixteen years until he left the active ministry in 1970. He became laicized in 1971 and worked as Director of the Maternal Infant Care Clinic in Dorchester MA. He attended Eastern Nazarene College and received a Bachelor of Arts in Education in 1973 and then worked as a Staff Director of the Paul Dever State School in Taunton. During his tenure in Taunton, he received a Master’s Degree in Psychology in 1981 from Assumption College and remained at Dever until he retired in 1992.

Mr. Rausch was an active member of the Somerset Boy Scouts as a den leader and supervisor of activities. He was a devoted and long time member of St. Patrick Parish in Somerset as a Faith Formation teacher. He was a member of the High School Retreat Team, Men’s Club, Eucharistic Minister, and Lector. He was also a Eucharistic Minister at Catholic Memorial Home for several years.

Ed will always be remembered for his constant smile that immediately brought everyone into his large circle of friends, even at the very end of his life. He cherished the time spent with his family, and was especially proud of his grandchildren. He loved riding his bicycle on the Bristol bike path, the Boston Red Sox and the New England Patriots. He loved to travel and treasured fond memories of trips within the United States and to Europe. He very much enjoyed his vegetable garden and loved to fix things around the home.

The family would like to thank the staff in Unit2 at the Catholic Memorial Home for the care and compassion they provided to Mr. Rausch. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his beloved son and daughter, Edward J. Rausch (Ted), and his wife, Tina, of Somerset, Ma, and Mary Beth Holliday of Acushnet, MA. He was the brother of the late Joseph Rausch of Cape Cod and Robert Rausch of Taunton. He was the father-in-law of the late Dr. William Holliday, MD, of Acushnet, MA. He was the loving “Poppy” to his three devoted grandchildren, David, Matthew, and Erin Rausch of Somerset.

His Funeral Service will be held on SATURDAY at 10:00am from the Hathaway Community Home for Funerals, Buffinton St., Somerset, followed by a mass of Christian burial at 11:00am in St Patrick’s Church, 306 South St., Somerset. Relatives and friends are invited to attend, burial to follow in Saint Patrick Cemetery, Somerset. Memorial donations in Ed’s memory can be made to St. Patrick’s Church, 306 South St., Somerset, MA 02726, or to the Catholic Memorial Home, 2446 Highland Ave., Fall River, MA 02720.
