Bishop Accountability

DIOCESE OF CHARLOTTE NC

Accused Priests: 13 (of which 2 were "exonerated")
Total Priests: 677
Allegations: 18
Cost: $715,331 (of which $704,439 for counseling, other services to victims, and legal fees in 1972-2002; and $10,892 for counseling in 2003)
Data are for 1972-2003; the diocese was created in 1972.

See the Dallas Morning News database entry on Emeritus Bishop William Curlin. The June 2002 database examined the records of bishops and identified those who had allowed accused priests to continue working or had otherwise protected priests accused of sexual abuse. The database is relevant to the bishops' "Nature and Scope" study because the bishops who prepared the surveys for the study are in many cases responsible for the "scope" of the problem.

See press release and related article in the diocesan Catholic News & Herald, March 5, 2004.
