Lawyers for NSW Attorney-General Greg Smith have begun defamation proceedings against broadcaster Ray Hadley in the Supreme Court today.

Hadley is being sued for comments he made about Mr Smith on air earlier this year.

Mr Smith is a former parishioner of Catholic priest Father Finian Egan, who is facing 20 charges of child sexual abuse dating from the 1960s.

It is understood the defamation case relates to allegations aired by Hadley that Mr Smith told another priest that an alleged victim of Father Egan wanted $1 million from the church.

Mr Smith has previously said he cannot remember making the comments.
