The Italian journalist at the center of the “Vatileaks” scandal has declined to identify any of his sources, aside from Paolo Gabriele. But he said that no cardinal furnished him with confidential documents.

Gianluigi Nuzzi, whose book Sua Santita contained a large number of leaked documents, pointed out in an interview that no one has questioned the authenticity of those documents. In an earlier statement he had claimed that he received some papers “from those who wrote them.” That claim seemed to point to ranking Vatican officials, but now Nuzzi has denied that any of his sources are cardinals.

Nuzzi said that he would not identify anyone who provided him with confidential material, and would speaker of Paolo Gabriele, the Pope’s former valet, only because Gabriele has acknowledged that he took papal correspondence to the copied and delivered to the press.
