A former priest of the Diocese of Cloyne in Co Cork has lost his appeal against his dismissal as a cleric.

Dan Duane, who is in his mid-70s and from Mallow, was defrocked in March 2013 following a canonical trial for abusing teenagers and minors, the diocese said in a statement.

This afternoon, the diocese announced that Mr Duane’s appeal against his dismissal had been rejected by church authorities in Rome.

Bishop of Cloyne Dr William Crean paid tribute to people who had come forward to tell their stories. He apologised to them and expressed sorrow to them.

Dr Crean insisted that what he called comprehensive child protection measures were now in place in the Diocese of Cloyne.
