KNOX Grammar let pedophile teachers continue at the school for years after clear indications they had sexually assaulted students, shown them pornographic videos and engaged in other inappropriate conduct, an inquiry has heard.

The Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse heard that across more than three decades of abuse involving five teachers, school authorities did not report a single incident to police.

Yesterday marked the start of a two-week inquiry into abuse between 1970 and 2003 at the prestigious private day and boarding school in Sydney that operates under the auspices of the Uniting Church.

The inquiry heard from former students who said their lives had, in the words of one, been “trashed” by predator teachers Barrie Stewart, Adrian Nisbett, Craig Treloar, Roger James and Damien Vance.

The former students claimed the abuse would have been known to the headmaster for most of the period, Ian Paterson.
