A Jehovah’s Witness elder has denied he tried to discourage an abuse survivor from going to the royal commission into child sexual abuse.

Jim Bello an elder in a congregation in Western Australia visited the woman, referred to as BCB, in 2012 to discuss her allegations of abuse by an elder in the church in the 80s and 90s.

On Tuesday Mr Bello said he had been told by the branch that oversees the Jehovah’s Witness Church in Australia to visit BCB and her husband at their WA farm to see if he could help and to gain information.

He recalled a conversation with BCB’s husband who told him his wife was thinking of going to the royal commission.
