Australia’s most senior Catholic, Cardinal George Pell, has been charged on summons with historical sexual assault offences.

Victoria Police today announced Cardinal Pell is facing multiple charges in relation to multiple complainants.

He will appear at Melbourne Magistrates Court in July this year for a filing hearing.

Deputy Commissioner Shane Patton said a summons had been served on Cardinal Pell’s legal representatives in Melbourne.

“Cardinal Pell has been treated the same as anyone else in this investigation,” Mr Patton said.
