Vic priest abuse case cites school culture

The “disgusting” and “reprehensible” molestation of boys by a Catholic priest more than three decades ago has been linked to a culture of abuse at Victoria’s notorious Rupertswood boarding school.

Frank Peter De Dood has been taken into custody while a Victorian County Court judge considers a jail term for the 64-year old after he pleaded guilty to indecently assaulting five boys.

Dozens of students were abused by a number of priests at Salesian College Rupertswood in Sunbury in the 1970s and 1980s.

A psychiatric assessment of De Dood raised the possibility of a link between his crimes and the culture of both the Salesian order and the school.

“The culture of the school and religious order may likely be linked to his offending,” the doctor said in a report tendered in court.
